97% of Maltese followed World Cup matches on TVM and TVM2
Three-fourths of the Maltese population followed the World Cup and almost all of them saw the matches on TVM and TVM2.
These figures emerged after a scientific study commissioned by PBS and carried out by Dr Vincent Marmarà, a statistician and lecturer at Malta University, and reveals that 97% of those who viewed the World Cup did so on national broadcasting.
Dr Marmarà said that if you take the population of those over 16 years of age, this amounts to approximately 360,000 people, and of these 250,000 followed the competition on TVM and TVM2. He said that when interviewees were asked how many games they watched, the survey shows that they watched an average of 30 matches.
The study showed that from a sample of 474 people, 28.4% watched all the matches with more men watching than women, while more Maltese were glued to their television sets than Gozitans.
Gozitans watched less of the World with only 65% doing so, while the figures for Malta were much higher, said Dr Marmarà.
Most matches were watched from home and the failure of the Italian national team to reach the finals did not seem to affect its Maltese supporters because they still watched the matches, even though with less enthusiasm.
Dr Marmarà said that only 4.2% did not follow the World Cup because the Italians were not present. The study also showed that those who missed matches either did so because they were at work or otherwise just could not find enough time!7
